We often hear about goal setting in late December as we get set to turn the page on the calendar. But what’s stopping you from tackling a new habit in the fall? The spring? Or at any time that works well for you?
It’s time to throw out the resolution calendar and get started on those goals today. That means not only choosing a goal, but figuring out a plan on how you’ll reach it. That’s where we come in!
The Library has put together five of the most common goals we hear about, and we’ve offered some suggestions on how to get started on your way to success.
And always remember – you can achieve your full potential at the Library, no matter which month you start in.
At any age, learning something new reminds us that growth never stops. Find inspiration and start by browsing our extensive collections. Books, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, and even musical instruments (available at Memorial Park Library!) will help you improve a skill or even learn something completely new.
You will find what you need to improve your cooking skills, learn different crochet patterns, help you get started on a DIY home project, and much more.
It might be time for a tutor! Tutoring can help you gain confidence, learn new study habits, and help you get the grades you’re after. Not sure how to find one? Well, that’s where we come in. The Library offers free access to live tutors with brainfuse. Tutors are available from 2:00 – 11:00 pm daily and are experts in the Alberta curriculum. Students can get constructive feedback on their writing and even ask for help with their homework.
Finding a new job can often start with a cover letter and resume, but figuring out what’s important to include can feel overwhelming. How do you make your application stand out when there are hundreds of others in consideration for one position?
Whether you are currently unemployed or are looking for a change, the Library can help you put your best foot forward as you apply for jobs. Visit the Job Desk at Central Library, in partnership with Bow Valley College, to meet with a trained career coach who can help with job searching, resume and cover letter development, interview skills, and more.
Asking for help can be hard! We are fortunate to work with incredible partners in the community who are experts in this field. In partnership with Wood’s Homes, the Wellness Desk can be found at both Central and Crowfoot libraries. This service connects you to crisis counsellors who help you access free mental health and recovery support, health information, and referrals to services. Our website also provides information on general wellness, youth mental health support, and crisis counsellors.
If you want to visit a new place — in Canada or internationally — you can get inspiration by visiting the Library. Our Collections offer travel guides and books for destinations like the Rocky Mountains, Japan, Australia, and everything in-between.
Once you decide where you’re going, make sure you know the basics of the language that you’ll need to know. Check out Transparent Language Online which provides tools to build your vocabulary and practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a new language.
Not able to make a big trip right now? Fiction and non-fiction books are a great escape that can take you to new places, even while you’re still in Calgary.
Now that you have the resources to set new goals, you have to stay accountable and put in the time and work needed to reach them. Books like Atomic Habits by James Clear or Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg will help keep you on track.
