Calgary Public Library is a safe space for books and ideas. You have the freedom to access and choose from a wide range of books that can help inform your own opinions and perspectives.
The Library has created a Book Sanctuary to raise awareness around the freedom to read and to share more about your right to access books that have been challenged or banned. The exhibit will challenge you to consider the risks of censorship and highlight books that have been challenged.
The exhibit will open in the Create Space at Central Library for Freedom to Read Week and will be on display until the end of March, with smaller displays around the city at community libraries.
Visit the Book Sanctuary at any location to reflect on what intellectual freedom means to you. Add your favourite books to the Sanctuary and choose your personal commitment tocelebrating the Freedom to Read.
Along with the Book Sanctuary, the Library is hosting Freedom to Read Week programming including a film screening of The Librarians in partnership with Calgary Underground Film Festival at Central Library and a program in partnership with CBC discussing Freedom to Read at Shawnessy Library.
