How to Prepare for Kindergarten in Calgary

It may feel like it was just yesterday that your little ones were taking their first steps or saying their first words. All of a sudden, their first day of school is approaching.

You might be wondering, “where do I even begin to get them ready for Kindergarten?” Don’t worry, we have some helpful tips to get you started. Watch the video or read more below to learn how you can help your child prepare for Kindergarten.

1. Encourage Independence

Let your child start doing small tasks on their own including cleaning up after themselves, going to the bathroom, or getting dressed. This will help them prepare to do things on their own when they start school.

2. Play

Children learn by playing. Free play can include make-believe, building, and art. Visit the playground at your new school, or an indoor or outdoor Early Learning Centre at the Library. You can also encourage your child to play with other kids to practise socializing.

3. Read Every Day in Any Language

Read together every day and point out words in the world around you. Speak and read in your home language. Students who have a strong foundation in their first language are likely to learn English more quickly. Reading and storytelling in the first language, including in languages with non-alphabetic writing systems, helps with learning to read.

4. Visit the Library

The Library has many resources to choose from, including books in multiple languages, free programs, and storytimes. In the spring and summer, you can also pick up a Kindergarten Book Bag at most Library locations, excluding Rocky Ridge and Prototype: Skyview.

The bag includes:

  • Activity sheets
  • Top Tips brochure
  • A bookmark about Library eResources
  • Library books

5. Talk About School

It's natural for your child to have a variety of reactions to starting school. Ask your child how they are feeling and let them know it's okay to be both excited and nervous. Kindergarten can be a change for the whole family with a new schedule and a variety of feelings — even for grown-ups!

The Library is here to support you throughout the school year. Find booklists, resources, and programs for young students on our website
