Teachers and students, it's time to get excited about LitCon 2025!
Hosted by Calgary Public Library, LitCon is a literary arts festival for students in kindergarten to Grade 9 from Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), and Rockyview Schools. It provides students with exposure to literary artists and fosters creativity, social connections, and skill development.
New this year, LitCon has expanded to run throughout the month of May. There will be both virtual programs and in-person workshops from May 5 – 29. An estimated 9,000 students (over 340 classes!) are expected to participate this year.
View the full list of programs on our website or read more of the details below.
These virtual sessions will inspire students to explore creative processes in writing, drawing, poetry, music, comics, oral storytelling, and more.
Virtual programs include a keynote with author Johnnie Christmas, a storytelling workshop with rapper KTheChosen, and a drawing demonstration with Peter Brown, author of The Wild Robot.
Registration for virtual programs is through Eventbrite and closes 24 hours before the program starts.
In-person programming will be hosted at various Library locations including Nose Hill, Seton, Saddletowne, Country Hills, Crowfoot, Fish Creek, and Village Square.
The in-person programs will be hands on and include a comic-making session, improv for kids, making music with ukuleles and kazoos, and hands-on exploration of therapy through art.
The registration deadline for in-person programs is May 2 and there is limited availability for each session.
Register your class for in-person or virtual programs by sending an email to litcon@calgarylibrary.ca with your school, grade, and number of students. The School Support Librarian will contact you to confirm registration.
Students can share new skills that they learned at LitCon by writing a short story or poem. Send your work to litcon@calgarylibrary.ca by June 15. If your story or poem is selected, it will be featured in our short story dispenser at Central Library and you'll receive a free membership to Alexandra's Writers' Centre Society. Five entries will be selected.
Students can submit one of the following:
The work must be your own original writing and cannot require a specific line layout or indentation. All submissions must be family-friendly and ready to publish without needing edits.
