Celebrating Children’s Books at Calgary Public Library

Children's books are much more than a tool to learn how to read. They can take you to new places, make you laugh and cry, and can even help you understand yourself better. As our CEO always says, “everything you need to know you can learn from a children’s book.” With access to children’s books, young readers are able to develop healthy reading habits.

There are many ways that the Library celebrates children’s books and helps nurture a love of reading. Read more below to learn how the Library shares children's books with the community.

Books for All Readers

What’s the easiest way to find the right children’s book? By visiting the Library of course!

The Library has a team of Selectors that carefully choose books for our collections. They do extensive research and stay on top of trends to ensure that our shelves are filled with books that young Calgary readers will love while also helping them learn to read.

In addition, books are available in multiple formats including large print, graphic novels, eBooks, and audiobooks. This helps readers with all abilities and interests find the right book for them.

Spaces that Combine Play with Reading

Once you find the perfect children’s book, you’ll want to find a great spot to read it.

The Library’s children’s areas and Early Learning Centres support play and active learning. Immersed with books and interactive elements, our spaces are designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

It’s not just the Library that can be a great space for reading — you can take inspiration from our spaces into your own home. By simply having books and toys in the same shelves and bins, kids will associate books and reading with fun.

My First Bookshelf

Research shows that having even 20 books at home can foster a lifelong love of reading. In partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Calgary Public Library recently celebrated five years of My First Bookshelf. This free, early-literacy book delivery initiative mails an age-appropriate, personalized book each month to children from birth to age five, giving them books they get to keep.

Over 3,000 children have graduated from the program.

“Many beautiful and memorable moments came out of our time in the My First Bookshelf program. We grew into a family while reading these books together each night,” says Alice, a parent of a My First Bookshelf participant.

How You Can Help

Over 179,000 books have been delivered through My First Bookshelf and the demand continues to grow.

There are currently 1,000 children waiting to enroll in My First Bookshelf, but you can help. A gift of just $6.90 every month provides a new book for one child.
