A transformative new facility, designed with Calgarians in mind, is coming to southwest Calgary.
Construction is now underway on Belmont Fieldhouse and Library, located near the intersection of 210 Avenue and Creekside Boulevard S.W. Anticipated to open in 2027, the project will feature a new Calgary Public Library and an indoor multi-sport recreation space operated by The City of Calgary. This $71.8 million facility is designed to become a vibrant focal point of year-round activity in the community.
“As our city expands and continues to welcome new Calgarians, the need for additional library and recreation spaces has reached a critical point,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “The Belmont Fieldhouse and Library reflects our commitment to building vibrant, inclusive communities for all Calgarians.”
Belmont Fieldhouse will span approximately 118,000 square feet and feature a multi-sport artificial turf field, field viewing areas, dressing rooms, washrooms and administrative space. The adjacent 10,000-square-foot public library will include a children’s area, collections shelving, open seating, public meeting rooms, and an outdoor learning space. Together, the new facility will create a dynamic hub for recreation, learning and community connection.
“I am pleased that the Belmont Fieldhouse and Library will soon become a reality, delivering much-needed amenities and a wide range of programs to support the social and recreational needs of our growing southwest communities,” says Ward 13 Councillor Dan McLean.
In 2021, City Council approved investments in underserved areas to address gaps in recreation infrastructure. As part of this strategy, funding was allocated for a multi-use fieldhouse in the Belmont community, one of several projects aimed at increasing access to year-round recreation and social spaces across Calgary.
“We are excited to design and build a facility on behalf of The City and Calgary Public Library that will serve sporting and community needs in southern Calgary,” says Kerensa Swanson Fromherz, Director of Public Spaces Delivery. “We envision Belmont Fieldhouse and Library to be a place where people can gather year-round to play, practice, socialize and build strong community connections.”
Belmont Fieldhouse is part of The City of Calgary’s long-term strategy to expand high-quality public recreation infrastructure across the city, guided by GamePLAN, Calgary’s strategic framework for planning and investing in recreation facilities.
GamePLAN responds to population growth and aging infrastructure by setting service standards that increase bookable hours at fields, improve access in underserved areas and ensure new facilities are built to meet the evolving needs of Calgarians.
“Belmont Fieldhouse is a step forward in delivering on the goals of GamePLAN by addressing the urgent need for high-quality indoor fields,” says Heather Johnson, Director of Recreation and Social Programs. “Calgary continues to fall short of the standard for bookable field hours, and this facility is an important step in closing that gap. Belmont Fieldhouse marks the seventh of 13 fieldhouses envisioned in GamePLAN, and continued investment is essential to meet the growing needs of our city.”
The site also holds space for a future recreation facility planned for the other half of the property. While currently unfunded and in its early planning stages, this future development reflects The City’s long-term vision to continue expanding access to recreation in growing communities like Belmont. In addition, the site has been planned to accommodate a future high school, creating a fully integrated campus that brings together the fieldhouse, library, school and future recreation facility. This integrated approach will foster stronger connections between educational, recreational and community services, benefiting students and residents alike.
In 2022, funding to support a new library in the community of Belmont was secured through the Calgary Public Library Investment Program. “As our city continues to grow, it is critical that we are ready to provide much-needed public library services. With more than 58 percent of Calgarians as active members, your Library is growing too and eager to provide free services that help everyone to realize their potential,” says Barb Gillard, Executive Director, Visitor Experience at Calgary Public Library.
We know Calgarians are as excited as we are about the construction of this new facility, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone in 2027.
