Top Five Places to Read in Calgary

If you have a long reading list, finding books isn’t your issue. However, we know it can sometimes be hard to switch up your go-to reading spots. Calgary has many fantastic options that will allow you to fully immerse yourself in your books, magazines, and audiobooks.  

Some people like being around others, while others like being more secluded. You might like being sheltered indoors and your friend prefers a fresh breeze and sunshine. Whatever your preference is, our list of places to read in Calgary will have something for everyone.  

Calgary Public Library

We know that we are biased for having this at the top of the list, but we can back it up!  

With 22 locations across Calgary, the Library offers spaces that have places to sit and relax, natural light so you can read with ease, and of course, there is a huge collection of books to choose from. From the grand spaces of Central Library to the cozy charm of smaller locations like Sage Hill Library, there’s something for all readers to enjoy at the Library. 

Honourable mention: Memorial Park Library conveniently backs onto Central Memorial Park, making it a great spot to have both indoor and outdoor reading options.  

Devonian Gardens 

If you're tired of trying to predict Calgary’s weather, Devonian Gardens is a space where you can always stay comfortable as you turn the pages of your book. After you pick up your books at Central Library, take a quick CTrain ride to the CORE Shopping Centre. At Devonian Gardens, wander through an indoor tropical oasis. Walk past koi ponds, fountains, and thousands of plants before settling on a bench or chair to read and take in the nature around you  

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

The ambient sounds of wildlife will be sure to elevate your reading experience. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve with more than 270 species of birds and 21 species of mammals that pass through. Bring your reading glasses and your binoculars so you can go back and forth between your book and trying to spot the birds that are chirping around you.

Confederation Park

The picturesque landscape of Confederation Park makes it the perfect reading destination in northwest Calgary. If you’re bringing your kids along, settle near a playground so they can play and burn energy while you read and relax. There are also wetlands, gardens, and cute spots for picnics. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes because there will be plenty of reading spots that you will want to check out.  

Fish Creek Provincial Park 

Fish Creek Provincial Park is the second-largest urban park in Canada and features more than 100 kilometres of pathways. Whether you’re walking, biking, or rollerblading, you’ll be able to find many different park benches with stunning views that are perfect for reading. In the summer months, dig your toes into the sand at Sikome Aquatic Facility while you soak in the sun and get caught up on your favourite beach reads.
