Thousands of Calgary Public Library volunteers helped deliver 14,581 programs to members in 2023 alone.
Many of those volunteers are teens and young adults who dedicate their time to programs that engage and inspire their peers. To acknowledge their dedication and commitment to lifelong learning, the Library offers three scholarships annually to help support volunteers in the next chapters of their learning journeys.
The Bright Futures Scholarship is awarded to three young volunteers who are committed, enthusiastic, and take initiative in their volunteer role. The scholarships valued at $3,500, $2,000, and $1,000 are made possible by a gift from Barbara Killick, a former senior staff member at Calgary Public Library who witnessed the positive impact made by young volunteers on the lives of those in their community.
We are proud to recognize their commitment to making our community a better place and know they have bright futures ahead. Congratulations to Lubna Ismail, Reyhan Habib, and Adhya Gautam for this well-deserved recognition!
Lubna Ismail has volunteered with Calgary Public Library for the past six years. She felt that it was important to give back to her community because she attended the programs that she now volunteers for, including Reading Buddies and Math Quest. Lubna will be studying Health Sciences at McMaster University and looks forward to experiencing new things and broadening her perspective.
Reyhan Habib was his high school’s first-ever Student Library Assistant and is an avid volunteer. He has been volunteering with Calgary Public Library since 2018 at special events and through programs like Math Quest, Coding Buddies, Code Club, Hour of Code, and Teen Think Tank. By volunteering with the Library, Reyhan seeks to expand access to literacy, numeracy, and computer science resources for children and youth in Calgary. Reyhan will be studying Management at McGill University.
Adhya Gautam has been an active volunteer with the Library since 2022. She has been a leader in numerous programs such as Reading Buddies, Coding Buddies, Creative Writing Club, and Math Quest. Through these experiences, Adhya has contributed to her community while also developing lifelong leadership skills. She will be studying Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.
